Glossary: Command Line for IT: Bash and PowerShell

alias

Also written: aliases, Get-Alias

A short second name for a command, such as `gci` or `dir` for `Get-ChildItem`; `Get-Alias` lists them. Aliases differ between systems: on Windows PowerShell `ls` is an alias for `Get-ChildItem`, but on Linux it runs the real Linux `ls`, so full cmdlet names are safer in scripts.
