Glossary: PostgreSQL Beyond the Basics

pg_dump, pg_restore

Also written: pg_dump, pg_restore

Command-line tools that export a database or a single table to a file (`pg_dump`) and load such a file back into a database (`pg_restore`, or `psql` for plain SQL files). They are used for backups, for archiving a table such as a detached partition, and for moving small databases between servers or major versions.
