buffer overflow

Also written: overflow, buffer overflows

When a program writes more data into a buffer than it can hold, so the extra spills over and overwrites nearby memory, such as the return address. Repeated crashes after very long inputs are the clue, and a carefully built input can make the program run the attacker's code.
