certificate types

Also written: user certificate, machine certificate, device certificate

The same X.509 format serves different jobs: a TLS server certificate for a website, a code signing certificate for software, an S/MIME certificate for email, a user certificate for logging in, and a machine or device certificate that identifies a laptop or phone.
