DDoS (distributed denial of service)

Also written: DDoS, denial of service, application-layer denial of service

An attack that floods a service with traffic so real users cannot use it. A distributed attack comes from thousands of addresses, each staying under a per-address rate limit, so very large attacks need help from the internet provider or a cloud service.
