Extension

Also written: file extension, double extension, extensions

The end of a file name after the last dot, such as .pdf or .exe, which Windows uses to choose a program. Because File Explorer hides known extensions, invoice.pdf.exe can pass for a PDF: the extension is only a label, not proof of the file's real type.
