default gateway

Also written: default route, gateway, default via

The router a machine sends traffic to when the destination is outside its own subnet; for Kettle & Crane's office laptops that is the office router, 192.168.10.1. If the default route points at a wrong address, such as 192.168.10.254, local devices still work but every off-subnet destination fails, which is why Priya's laptop couldn't load the shop.
